Saudi cement manufacturer Qassim Cement Company has hired consultants to help the board with preparations for a new solar plant at its site in the northcentral city of Buraydah.

Founded in 1976 in the Qassim region (around 330 kilometres north-west of Riyadh), Qassim Cement Company is today one of Saudi Arabia’s (and the region’s) larger manufacturers of cement. Headquartered in Buraydah, the company produces about 4 million tonnes of cement annually.

With the aim of reducing its carbon footprint, in line with Vision 2030 goals, Qassim Cement Company is planning to build a 30 MW solar plant that will provide renewable energy to production site in Buraydah.

The new solar plant will integrate the generated solar power with the company’s current energy generation resources, and further aims to cut the company’s electricity costs.

Supporting the plan is a specialised consulting firm that is helping the management team with the roadmap and defining the scope of work. The consultants are also preparing the blueprint for the tender process that will procure the engineers and construction companies tasked with designing and building the solar plant.

Further details of the solar plant and the consultancy have not been released. The news comes shortly after Qassim Cement Company announced it is investing SAR 152 million ($40 million) to build a cement mill at its plant in Buraydah with a capacity of 300 tonnes.

Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 among others targets the country to reach net-zero emissions by 2060.
