Brooge Energy has awarded Germany’s Thyssenkrupp Uhde a contract to undertake a technical study of its planned green ammonia plant in the UAE. The firm announced in June that it was planning a 300,000 t/y green ammonia plant at the Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi (Kizad). Little further information has been released, but such a project would likely come with a price tag of some $1.5bn.

A second phase to bring capacity up to 600,000 t/y is also planned. Kizad had announced last year that it is to be the site for a $1bn green ammonia facility which would use an 800MW solar plant to produce 200,000 t/y of green ammonia from 40,000 t/y of green hydrogen.

Brooge says that its renewables subsidiary BRE aims to begin construction in 2023. Professional services firm EY was contracted in August to develop a market assessment for the nascent low-carbon fuel, which is due to be delivered in Q4.
