Syria on Thursday signed a contract with a group of companies from the United Arab Emirates for the construction of a 300-MW solar park in the Widyan al-Rabie area in the Damascus countryside.

The park is expected to be built within two years, the Syrian Ministry of electricity said on Thursday. Located near the Tishreen thermal station, the facility will be divided into six sections each of 50 MW and will produce 500 million kWh of green electricity annually, saving 350,000 tonnes of carbon emissions.

The names of the UAE companies that will implement the project were not disclosed.

The project is considered a strong launch of the country’s efforts to expand the share of renewable energy as part of its 2030 strategy, according to electricity minister Ghassan al-Zamil. The Arab country aims to generate at least 5% of its electricity from renewables, boosting solar capacity to 1.5 GW and adding 900 MW of wind turbines.

As part of its efforts to raise the share of renewables, the government announced in October the creation of a state-backed fund that will support green energy projects.
