To implement investment projects worth 1.5 bn dollars

TUNIS : Tunisia is aiming to increase its renewable energy share in the overall production of energy to 24% by 2050, against today’s 3%, according to Nafaa Baccari, director for renewable energy of the National agency for the management of energy (Name) of Tunis.

Addressing a webinar on the ‘Role of solar photovoltaic and aeolian in energy transition’, Baccari stated that this objective “can be reached” if constraints that have hindered some projects started in 2017 will be removed and added that the improvement of the legislative framework regulating the sector and new policies on concessions will contribute to reach this goal. Baccari, in this context, recalled that the 2025 medium-term objective was outlined as part of the renewable energy development plan 2022/2025, which provides for the production of 1.7 GW for new projects. The implementation will require investments worth some 1.5 billion dollars and will create over 1,000 permanent and direct jobs. This plan will also avoid natural gas energy production costs of some 500 million dinars a year and those concerning the import of one million tons of natural gas a year, which means cutting imports by 30%.

The director moreover stressed the need to further exploit the potential of solar power in Tunisia, which has a significant exposure rate exceeding 3,000 hours a year.

Tunisia, in 2022, reviewed its ambition for a proportion of renewable energy in the production of electricity, raising it to 35% from 30% in 2030. In practice, 90% of this quota will mainly come from aeolian and solar photovoltaic energy, according to Baccari. In order to pursue this goal, the State aims to invest an annual 900 million dinars to boost energy projects in this sector.
