As global warming and environment-related issues escalate, Morocco is implementing several initiatives to protect the agricultural ecosystem, oceans, and life on land.

Rabat : Morocco was one of the first countries to implement measures to protect the environment and tackle global warming, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rachid Talbi Alami said on Monday.

Talbi Alami made his remarks at the opening of the 144th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union held in Nusa Dua, Indonesia.

During the event, the parliamentarian outlined Morocco’s policy on renewable energy and the production of solar, wind, marine and hydraulic power.

He also discussed the country’s agricultural policy that aims to ensure enough food for Moroccans, as well as supply numerous international markets.

“The Kingdom is working to share its experience and policy with African countries through flagship projects,” Talbi Alami said.

During the conference the lawmaker highlighted Morocco’s implementation of a freshwater fishing policy and its ban on manufacturing non-biodegradable plastic, as well as the reuse of wastewater after treatment.

In his speech, Talbi Alami noted the Adaptation of African Agriculture (AAA) initiative, which aims to tackle climate change and its impact on the agriculture ecosystem.

Launched in 2016, the AAA initiative sought to mobilize $30 billion for Africa with a focus on transforming and strengthening African agriculture to help the continent adapt to its changing climate.

“With a vision to also preserve the marine ecosystem, Morocco has endorsed all international initiatives aimed at achieving this objective,” noted Tabli Alami.

Highlighting Morocco’s sustainability commitments, Talbi emphasized that the country will continue to support international conventions aimed at protecting the oceans against pollution.

The official argued that the challenge requires a shared responsibility, calling upon all parliaments to make use of new technologies and digital exchange of data to boost renewable sources.

Morocco’s House of Representatives has installed more than 670 solar panels on its roof to produce a third of the building’s energy.

The house is aiming to reduce the use of paper by 90%, by storing and sending more documents electronically.

Concluding his speech, Talbi Alami recalled that many countries are suffering more from drought, desertification, and deterioration of forests, saying that the situation makes them vulnerable and affected by the climate crisis.
