It is the first clean energy project in the country

Saudi developer and operator of power and water desalination plants, ACWA Power, will build a 1,000mw solar power plant in central Iraq, in Najaf city, 160 km from the capital. Iraq’s Minister of Electricity, Ziad Fadil, has announced that the Saudi joint venture, which came shortly after Saudi Energy Minister, HH Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman and Fadil held talks concerning potential partnerships opportunities, will develop the country’s first clean energy project.

The partnership proves an expanding cooperation between the sister countries, and an interest in strengthening bonds, as Iraq’s role in the region’s stability is highlighted by Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, HH Prince Faisal bin Farhan.

France-based TotalEnergies, a multinational integrated energy and petroleum company, had reported an agreement in which it will develop, alongside ACWA Power, a 1gw solar power plant to supply electricity to the Basrah regional grid, which reflects Iraq’s growing interest in clean energy.

Iraq has awarded another solar power facility, a 250mw plant in Najaf, which will be constructed by PowerChina Company. And in August 2021, Reuters reported that a 2,000mw agreement with PowerChina had been signed for the country.
