The era of record low-cost solar projects has come to an end, but prices remain extremely low and Saudi Arabia is committed to huge capacity increases. This week’s announcement of a 2GW west coast plant brings the total installed and under development to more than 10GW.

Saudi Arabia on 30 November announced plans for its largest renewable power project to date. A 2.06GW solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant is to be developed at Al Shuaibah in Mecca province by Saudi private sector firm Acwa Power and Badeel, a subsidiary of the country’s PIF sovereign wealth fund.

The Shuaibah 2 plant brings the total capacity of renewable energy facilities at various stages of development in the kingdom to 10.23GW. Of this, less than 700MW has been brought online, but momentum is fast building and a new 3.3GW development phase was put to tender in September (MEES, 30 September).
