The “Ecofin” international agency for economic studies stated today, Tuesday, that Africa is qualified to be a world leader in the field of green hydrogen.

It noted that if the brown continent exploits its huge potential for solar energy, it will be able to produce green hydrogen at a low cost and on a large scale to meet local demand and become a player in the global market for low-carbon energies.

Based on a report issued by the European Investment Bank, the International Solar Alliance, and the African Union, Ecofin indicated Africa’s ability to produce about 50 million tons of green hydrogen annually by 2035 at a cost competitive with oil by exploiting its unparalleled solar potential.

The report highlights the possibility of producing this large amount of carbon-free hydrogen in Northwest Africa (Morocco and Mauritania), Egypt, and Southern Africa (Namibia and South Africa).

The installation of 1,230 gigawatts of solar energy in these three centers would enable the production of green hydrogen at an economically viable cost of fewer than 2 euros per kilogram.
