French renewable power producer Qair has launched commercial operations at two solar photovoltaic (PV) plants in Morocco with a combined capacity of 4.2 MWp.

Both plants were inaugurated earlier this month at official ceremonies attended by government officials and representatives of the company.

The larger one of the two parks, touted as one of the biggest industrial power plants in Africa, was installed on behalf of French cables manufacturer Nexans SA (EPA:NEX). Located atop the group’s production base in the city of Mohammedia near Casablanca, the 2.5-MWp plant consists of 4,640 panels covering some 12,166 square metres of rooftop areas. The output of the facility is expected to offset 2,850 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions annually.

Meanwhile in Nouaceur province, in the region of Casablanca-Settat, Qair has put on stream a 1.7-MW solar plant for French aerospace components manufacturer Safran SA (EPA:SAF). The future generation is expected to help the French group cover more than 20% of its annual energy consumption in Morocco.

Last year, Qair’s subsidiary in Morocco brought online a ground-based solar plant to supply the local business of Swiss food and drinks giant Nestle SA (VTX:NESN).
