Morocco was supposed to be flush with power after restarting two key gas-fired CCGT plants in June. But gas imports via Spain have been insufficient with Rabat stepping up power imports instead.

Morocco is once again leaning on Spain to help meet domestic electricity demand as soaring summer temperatures test the country’s effective generation capacity. A much-touted agreement to import gas from Spain has so-far failed to replace lost Algerian flows (MEES, 1 July), with Rabat instead having to significantly scale up electricity imports instead.

Power imports from Spain are the highest in around four years, with net purchases in June soaring to more than 200GWh, according to data from Spanish grid operator Red Eléctrica de España.
