John Cockerill’s branch in Morocco currently has over 700 employees in the country.

Rabat – The Belgian engineering firm John Cockerill is set to accelerate Morocco’s green transition with the establishment of a gigafactory dedicated to the production of electrolyzers, the first of its kind on the African continent.

In a press release issued this week, the Belgian group announced that it had finalized an agreement with a Moroccan energy company to manufacture electrolyzers for the production of green hydrogen.

The Moroccan and Belgian groups will form a joint venture to develop green hydrogen solutions in Morocco.

Among other things, noted the press release, the new joint venture will include a gigafactory for the production of alkaline electrolyzers.

“This relationship enables John Cockerill to contribute to Moroccan and international goals in terms of green hydrogen and renewable energies,” said the statement.

John Cockerill’s Moroccan branch currently has over 700 employees in the North African country.

The initiative comes as Morocco continues to invest in upgrading its already advanced renewable energy infrastructure.

Last month, the renewable energy development company CWP Global announced the launch of two major green hydrogen projects, including the AMUN project, which will deploy 15 GW of wind and solar in Morocco.

Meanwhile, Morocco’s Research Institute for Solar Energy and New Energies (IRESEN) launched the country’s first micro-pilot green hydrogen production system in September.

The pilot project consists of a 20kW electrolyzer and photovoltaic (PV) solar panels.
