Iraq‘s Prime Minister, Mohammed Al-Sudani, has revealed Iraq’s intention to invite more companies to partake in solar power projects as part of a broader effort to increase renewable energy’s contribution to the domestic energy mix to one-third by 2030.

“We have set a clear and definitive goal, which is to meet one-third of our electricity requirements by 2030 through investments in renewable energy sources,” said Al-Sudani at a seminar in Moscow.

He also highlighted Iraq’s commitment to fostering investments in gas projects to harness the nation’s substantial gas reserves.

Alongside renewables development, Iraq, which holds the world’s fifth-largest proven oil reserves, plans to expand its conventional power infrastructure to address persistent supply shortages resulting from decades of internal conflicts.

Currently generating nearly 19,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity, Iraq’s actual demand is estimated to be around 30,000 MW
