In contrast to Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt and Oman, Algeria has barely begun to think about green hydrogen. This is despite key advantages, in particular large underutilized and ‘hydrogen ready’ pipelines to Europe. Can it capitalize?

Stefano Venier, CEO of Italian state-led gas pipeline network operator Snam set out his firm’s 5-year strategy on 19 January. A key element is getting Italy’s gas network ‘hydrogen ready’, not just for Italy itself but ultimately to provide a “southern corridor” connecting North Africa with central and northern Europe.

Mr Venier says that Snam has submitted a request for EU Projects of Common Interest (PCI) funding for this “hydrogen backbone”. “And what made us confident to submit the PCI was the fact that we had a sizable interest from southern German companies, Austrian companies ready to invest in Northern Africa to get the hydrogen through that pipeline,” he adds.
