The project is set to meet up to 8% of the UK’s electricity needs, Xlinks CEO Simon Morrish said.

Rabat : The UK government issued on Thursday a policy paper announcing that it is considering the viability of the Xlinks Morocco-UK Power Project and studying how it could contribute to the country’s energy security.

Xlinks Morocco-UK Power Project is a 10-gigawatt green energy project that is set to supply the UK with renewable energy from Morocco via four 3,800 subsea cables. The project is set to be the largest of its kind in the world.

Titled “Powering Up Britain – Energy Security Plan,” the paper highlighted the UK government’s desire to “explore the potential for international projects to provide ‘clean and affordable power’.”

In this respect, the paper referred to the Xlinks project, “a proposed large-scale onshore wind, solar and battery electricity generation site in Morocco.”

The paper “outlines the Government’s blueprint for the future of energy in the UK, outlining how they will diversify energy production by investing in renewables to deliver energy, consumer, climate and economic security for the country,” said Xlinks in a press release.

Xlinks CEO Simon Morrish welcomed the British government’s “determination” to work with his company and implement Xlinks’ renewable energy venture.

He echoed the British government’s remarks, saying that “the UK’s energy security is a vital national interest.” He also stressed the importance of “sticking to the Government’s 2035 net zero electricity system target and avoid short-term thinking that may derail the transition to clean, abundant sources of energy.”

Describing the project as “the first-of-its-kind,” Morrish said that it will meet up to 8% of the UK’s electricity needs with renewable energy, “reducing consumer bills and adding to security of supply in the process.”

The project’s first cable is set to become operational in early 2027 while the other three are expected to launch in 2029.
