Spent Pot Lining Treatment Plant for up to $40mln to contribute to environment protection
MANAMA: Alba, the world’s leading aluminium smelter ex-China, is seeking to become a partner with the government in achieving Bahrain’s plan to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2060, said company’s chief executive Ali Al Baqali.
“The company’s plan, including several short, medium and long-term initiatives aiming to reduce carbon emissions, will be ready in February next year, after being submitted to the board of directors and approved,” he told our sister paper Akhbar Al Khaleej.
He was speaking on the sidelines of his participation in a UN Development Programme symposium to shed light on Bahrain’s strategy to reach net zero emissions by 2060.
He said the company has set up a Spent Pot Lining Treatment Plant for up to $40 million to contribute to environment protection in the kingdom and issued a tender to seek developers for a 5MW solar power plant on its premises in Bahrain as part of its initiatives to diversify sources of energy and use clean energy.
It also developed a fish farm at its Calciner and Marine Plant in Sitra to boost the kingdom’s aquaculture, in addition to other projects under study with experts, he added.
Alba also announced the appointment of Sayed Salah as new acting manager for environment, social and governance (ESG), with immediate effect.
To drive Alba’s ESG transformation, Mr Salah will report directly to the chief executive and spearhead Alba’s soon-to-be-announced Sustainability Fully-Fledged Roadmap.
Commenting on establishing a standalone ESG department, Mr Al Baqali said: “Sayed Salah’s appointment comes at an exciting time in our journey as we accelerate our focus to Alba’s ESG transformation and embrace our nation’s objectives under the leadership of His Royal Highness the Crown Prince and Prime Minister to reach net zero by 2060.”
Mr Al Baqali
A Bahraini national, Mr Salah graduated from the University of Bahrain with a BSc in chemical engineering in 1996 and joined Alba as a trainee supervisor in casthouse, following which he moved in 2009 to the research and development department.
In 2011, he joined the Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) department as an environment engineer then was promoted to head of environment engineering in 2015.
Mr Salah has also obtained MSc in environment and sustainable development from University of Bahrain.
