The total number of renewable energy projects that have been implemented to date form more than 95% of the national renewable energy target

Bahrain has already achieved 95 per cent of the national renewable energy target of 250 megawatts (MW) by 2025, with more than 237MW of green energy being produced currently, Sustainable Energy Authority president Dr Abdulhussain Mirza has said.

“The total number of renewable energy projects that have been implemented to date form more than 95pc of the national renewable energy target; which is to achieve 250MW by 2025. We now have four years left to realise the remaining 5pc, and we are confident that the kingdom will exceed the national goal by 2025,” he said during the official opening of the Batelco Solar Park yesterday.

Dr Mirza added: “We aim to make Bahrain a centre of clean energy excellence in line with the leadership’s vision to achieve the kingdom’s renewable energy goals, particularly the national goal of reaching zero-carbon neutrality by 2060.”

Also present at the opening event, held at the Royal Golf Club in Riffa, were Transportation and Telecommunications Minister Kamal Ahmed, Electricity and Water Affairs Minister Wael Al Mubarak, Supreme Council for Environment chief executive Dr Mohamed Bin Daina, YK Almoayyed and Sons chairman Farouq Almoayyed, along with Batelco chairman Shaikh Abdulla bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, board members and management officials.

With the launch of the solar park, Batelco has become the first telecom company in the kingdom to install solar energy systems that produce clean energy.

The park produces a total of 1,600MWh of clean energy, which will aid in reducing approximately 900 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

“This project reaffirms our commitment to support the efforts of the government in achieving its vision of environmental sustainability, and reaching its goals of decarbonisation, enhancing energy efficiency and doubling renewable energy sources,” said Shaikh Abdulla.

“We look forward to introducing additional green initiatives as part of Batelco’s sustainability strategy,” he concluded.

Following the welcome address and presentation on the project, the guests visited the solar park, located in Ras Abu Jarjoor (RJR), next to Batelco’s Satellite Earth Station and RJR Data Centre.

The 1MW ground-mounted solar photovoltaic plant was set-up by Almoayyed Solar Company, a division of the Almoayyed International Group.
