Algeria’s state-owned utility Sonelgaz and Italian electricity and gas company Enel SpA are considering a potential partnership in the areas of green hydrogen, solar panel manufacturing and solar energy storage as well as power grid digitalisation.

The various aspects of potential cooperation were discussed during a virtual meeting by Sonelgaz’ chief executive Mourad Adjal and Enel officials on Tuesday.

During the meeting, Adjal emphasised that the bilateral relations between Algeria and Italy provide an appropriate atmosphere for a partnership between the two companies in the energy sector. He also stressed that such an alliance would open the African market for both partners.

As a result of the discussions, the two parties agreed to form a working group to continue the talks on joint activities in the areas of interest. The work of the group will be accompanied by visits between representatives of the two companies.

The North African country is currently amid a process to award 1 GW of solar capacity as part of the Solar 1,000 scheme.
