Qatar Launches ‘World’s Largest’ Blue Ammonia Project – EQ Mag Pro

Qatar is looking to trump its neighbors in the emerging low-carbon fuel industry, and plans to launch the world’s largest blue ammonia plant in 2026. It will have to work hard to catch up in developing supply chains.

Qatar has joined the Middle East’s burgeoning blue ammonia scene, targeting 1Q 2026 startup of a 1.2mn t/y capacity plant at Mesaieed. With Gulf energy producers rushing to secure early-mover advantages in the nascent low-carbon fuel industry, a familiar tendency to one-up their neighbors has also emerged.

Qatar has been swift to label the 1.2mn t/y project “the world’s largest such facility.” Certainly it exceeds the planned 1mn t/y “world-scale” project planned in neighboring Abu Dhabi’s Ruwais industrial city (MEES, 25 March). Adnoc intends for the Ruwais blue ammonia plant to begin operations in 2025.
